PERSONAL SPACE
Personal space for Americans is the area around a person that one thinks of as their area or space, and that they don’t want other people to come into or enter as they meet or talk.  The amount of space people want or need around them, in order to feel comfortable, depends on a lot of factors, including where the person is, who the person is interacting with, how well one knows the other person, and so on.  Preferences and norms about personal space vary among individuals and especially across cultures.  American, as a whole, are people who like a bit more personal space compared to people from other cultures.  Most Americans value their personal space and feel discomfort, upset, or anxiety when another person gets too close.  This is especially true when talking to or meeting a new person and when in groups. How close two American’s stand when they are interacting/talking usually indicates how close the relationship is between these people.  The more familiar someone is with another person indicates how close they will let that person come within their personal space in order to interact.
Americans covet their own personal space, and generally do not like that space to be invaded. They find it uncomfortable when others stand too close, and will unconsciously move away. In addition, Americans have a strong sense of privacy, and feel everyone is entitled to that. They do not like to be asked their age, weight, or salary. Conversations about personal family matters, political opinions, or religion are reserved for later stages of friendship.
An intimate zone is reserved for close friends, lovers, children and close family members. Another zone is used for conversations with friends, to chat with associates, and in group discussions. A further zone is reserved for strangers, newly formed groups, and new acquaintances. A fourth zone is used for speeches, lectures, and theater; essentially, public distance is that range reserved for larger audiences.
Friendships between Americans tend to be shorter and less intense than those between people from many other cultures, because Americans are taught to be self-reliant and live in a very mobile society. Friendships are “compartmentalized” with “friends at work,” or "friends at school.”  Americans often seem very friendly, even when you first meet them. This friendliness does not always mean that the person is looking for a deeper relationship. Many Americans are pleasant and professional, but indirect and hide their true emotions/feelings. Being polite is important in this culture, and sometimes they may keep being nice to you even if they do not wish to pursue a deeper friendship.
Personal space doesn’t mean very much in Indonesia, some people know about their own personal space but some others don’t. Sometimes, the people who live in town more conceiving about other’s personal space rather than who live in village. However, several people in village are conceiving what personal space means.
Some foreigners come from places where individualism is highly prized and valued. Also, the concept of personal space is very important to them. However, in Indonesia and many other countries that are more communal, the concept of “my space” is not really reinforced nor is it something that is valued. Your space is my space and my space is your space. Indonesians are used to an overcrowded society; they tend to ignore inadvertent invasions of space. Allowing for personal space is a sign of respect.
Due, no doubt, to the high concentration of the population, Indonesians have little, if any, sense of personal space or privacy. There is no word in the Indonesian language for “privacy”. Gossip and curiosity is rampant and Indonesians will ask you a wide range of personal questions without batting an eye. We can easily find men and women are doing gossip, in offices, shops, markets, parks, public transportation, and even in front of their house. Women and men are same; they always meet and talk about everything, important or unimportant things.
Most of Indonesian don’t know what it mean by personal space. For Indonesian, personal space not mean a lot, they only know how to unity, to help each without knowing the personal space of others. If we go around the city in Indonesia, we would find such gossipers from children, adult, and parents, especially the housewife. No doubt and no excuse, it can be due to the lack of work, they always waste more time to gossip rather than make their home.
The strong sense of neighborhood, unity and togetherness make Indonesian often transcend limitation of personal space of others. Though several people would prefer to it, some others would not.  It probably happens due to Indonesian’s slogan “Unity and Diversity” which means united we stand, divided we fall. From this slogan, they take it as the basic to support, help, to socialize and to work together each other. However, they frequently encroach personal space of others.
Means of encroaching others personal space in Indonesia is to interfere one’s affair and that is their only privacy, no need to know by public or another. Their privacy could be their secret or their individual problems. But Indonesian has an eager curiosity or only their idle curiosity, so makes all one’s problem they should not interfere in, be their problem too. We sometimes see, they interfere others problem. When one of the neighbors has problem, the other neighbor will come and ask with wide questions that may not be asked by them.
Whole people around the world are sure need “me-time” to be alone, think clearly, self-correction, to be quiet and to solve their own problem without any interfering. They would go to a quiet comfortable place, to calm their thought down, to feel free from any problem, and to think clearly. This is what American appreciated, their personal space. None would disturb him/her, and make noise when one said, “I need me-time”, because it is their right, they must feel dizzy from any trouble of their lives.
Understand how the use of personal space can convey social relationship between people in various cultures. Most people value their personal space and feel discomfort, anger, or anxiety when that space is encroached. However, permitting a person to enter it and/or entering somebody else’s are indicators of how the two people view their relationship. When we allow someone to enter to our room means that we are in close relationship with that person, because a room is one of symbol of personal space. Therefore, if you enter someone’s room without his/her permission, you mean encroached someone’s personal space.
In contrast, in Indonesia, your affair is my affair as well. The term of personal space in this country is not well applicable. Every person perceive of having right to know, understand and to solve one’s problem even though he/she does not want, especially if you are in neighbor. When you reject their help, they will feel guilty, upset, sad and useless, or they will feel that you are arrogant and conceited. Even if you mean that you want to stand on your own feet, solve own problem without depending on others or to be an independent one. Saying “I need me-time” in this country does not mean too much.
To sum up, these all what differ meaning term of personal space in America and Indonesia. Americans have their own limit of personal space that none would and should break that law. They keep it up because they know and understand well the meaning of personal space, limits and boundaries of each other. Americans would do straight forward if there is a thing they dislike, for example : if someone with new acquaintances talks too close to their face, holding hands, putting arm on shoulder, and touching face are little bit break the law or when new friend exactly uses the stuff without permission or interfere one’s problem. Americans have three basic principles of life; one of them is self-reliance, which is mean that the people have to do something by themselves, be an independent man and stand on own feet. This principle, they believe in and make them feel that they have to solve their own problem as long as they can.
In Indonesia, it is a little bit same with Americans, new people should not do the things like close relationship’s does. Nevertheless, interfering and encroaching somebody else’s personal space is common here. They do not know if it breaks the law, because they only want to be useful for friends, they perceived that they doing it right. Every different country has different culture, so American’s culture is different from Indonesian’s, it based on different principle of life.

Sample Essay "The Cuban Swimmer"

Background of Author
Milcha Sanchez-Scott was born on the island of Bali (1955) and her heritage reflects a diversity of ethnic and cultural influences. Her mother is of Indonesian, Chinese and Dutch ancestry and her father was born in Colombia and raised in Mexico. She attended a Catholic girls school near London, while her father was working in Europe. However, she also spent time in Colombia and Mexico before the family move to La Jolla, California, when Sanchez-Scott was fourteen years old. She attended the University of San Diego, where she earned a degree in literature, philosophy and theatre.
After graduation she worked at the San Diego Zoo and later in an employment agency for maids in Beverly Hills. She began collecting the stories of the immigrant women who were applying for work, and it was from the experience that Sanchez-Scoot’s first play, Latina, evolved. It was also around that time that she was hired by the L.A. theatre works to act in project at the women’s prison in Chino.
“The Cuban Swimmer”
Milcha Sanchez-Scott’s work frequently explores women’s experiences in a Hispanic American bicultural context. Her plays are a combination of gritty realism with surrealistic fantasy. Hispanic American means Hispanic and Latino Americans have origins in the countries of Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula consisting of Spain and Portugal.
The Cuban Swimmer is a story about a long-distance ocean swimmer; Margarita Suarez was aided by a magical intervention while she races from San Pedro to Catalina Island. This drama is a dramatic irony that there is difference exists between what we think will happen and what really happen. The characters in this drama show the ambition and struggle at the same time. Eduardo Suarez, father of Margarita drive his ambition for his daughter Margarita to win and success, Eduardo says, “She’s stroking seventy-two, with no problem. (He throws a kiss to the sky) it is a beautiful day to win. Aida : Que Hermoso! So clear and bright. Not a cloud in the sky. Mira! Mira! Even rainbows on the water…. A sign from God.” (3.8-9), he projects his own complex set of needs and desires (as father, immigrant, and exile) on Margarita. The swimmer also has to deal with hardships like an oil slick, hallucination of fish bitten her and her father’s dream, Margarita says “the fish are all biting me… they hate me… they whisper about me. She can’t swim, they say. She can’t glide, she has no grace… yellowtails, Bonita, tuna, man-o’-war, snub-nose, sharks, los barracudas…. They all hate me… only the dolphins care… and sometimes I hear the whales crying… she is lost, she is dead. I’m so numb, I can’t feel. Papi! Papi! Am I dead?” (5.25). margarita fells the hallucination by the fishes that make her lost concentration.
Margarita Suarez as the swimmer is one of daughter of Cuban immigrant family who place their hopes for the family's future on her, as a long-distance ocean swimmer.  She is a hard-worker; loyal and obedient to his parent especially her father. "Eduardo : rainbows on….. Ay cono! It’s an oil slick! You… you… (To Simon) stop the boat. (Runs to bow, yelling) Margarita! Margarita! On the next stroke, Margarita comes up all covered in black oil. Margarita : papi! Papi….! / Aida : Swim, hija, swim or the aceite will stick to your wings. Margarita : Papi?” (3.13-14.30-31). Margarita is a nineteen years old, however, she acts like a younger looking to her father Eduardo for explanation when she gets caught in an oil slick, constantly asking him what to do.
Eduardo Suarez, her father, the coach, the mentor. He is an ambitious father, he pushed his daughter to reach his dream, to be a winner. “Aida : (interrupting) Pues, do something Eduardo. You are the big coach, the monitor. / Eduardo : vamos, baby, punch those arms in. come on… do you hear me? Margarita : papi… papi…. Forgive me….”(3.20/5.26-27) Eduardo still push his daughter to swim and put in concentration when her daughter was tired and need to rest, like her mother said “Aida : Por supuesto she’s tired. I like to see you get in the water, waving your arms and legs from San Pedro to Santa Catalina. A person isn’t a machine, a person has to rest.” (5.13). Simon Suarez, Eduardo’s son, makes a lot of joke and frequently becomes immodest to his parent, he who steers the boat. “Eduardo : you’re stroking seventy-two! Simon : (singing) mama’s stroking, mama’s stroking seventy-two…. Eduardo : you comfortable with it? Simon : Seventy-two, seventy-two, seventy-two for you.” (3.2-5)
Aida Suarez is Margarita’s mother, over-protective and very sensitive. As in these dialogues, “Aida : Eduardo, that person insulted us. Did you hear, Eduardo? That he called us a simple people in a ragtag boat. Did you hear…? / This person comes in his helicopter to insult your wife, your family, your daughter…” (2.52,55) describe Aida as a sensitive mother. Abuela, Margarita’s grandmother is very religious, she sometimes speak in Spanish or mix in English-Spanish, both them believe in magic. “Abuela : Mi hija, insulto a la familia. Desgraciado!! / Si, a big hug to all my friends in Miami, Long Beach, Union city, except for my son Carlos who lives in New York in sin! He lives…. In Brooklyn with a Puerto Rican woman in sin! No decente….” (2.71,44), it perhaps because she is still influenced by culture heritage, and in the following dialogue, we will read the pray of Aida and Abuela in Spanish, “En el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espiritu Santo amen. (3.1)
The Cuban Swimmer is to represent a realistic portrait of a family who oscillates between adversity and triumph; frustration and hope. At the beginning of the play, margarita is swimming and her family follows her on the boat. Suddenly, a sound of helicopter is heard. There are two reporters of English Television, Mel Munson and Mary Beth White. They seem underestimate Suarez family, “Mel’s voice : look at that enthusiasm. The whole family has turned out to cheer little Margarita on victory! I hope they won’t be disappointed.”(2.48) Aida hears the reporter insult her family, saying that Margarita has no chance to win, “Simon : Yo Margo! You know that Mel Munson guy on TV? He called you a simple amateur and said you didn’t have a chance.”(2.70) though, the family still have the spirit to win, they are still energetic, cheer Margarita on victory.
Although one by one the obstacles arise to prevent Margarita to be the winner, she then appears to be the epitome of struggle from the outset of story. It is when the reporter came and insult Margarita, and at the time she swims around the oil slick, it means that family’s boat is leak, “Aida : swim, hija, swim or the aceite will stick to your wings.”(3.30)
In the scene four, while Margarita swims, Aida and her husband discuss the night they came to America on a boat and Aida describes the dream she had that night, "the dream of a big country with fields of fertile land and big, giant things growing. And there was by a green, slimy pond I found a giant pea pod and when I opened it, it was full of little, tiny baby frogs"(4.31) However, in the scene the hallucination comes from Margarita, where she feels that all fishes biting her and exile her. “the fish are all biting me… they hate me… they whisper about me. So after that, Eduardo still force her to keep on swimming even when she needs a rest. Finally, Margarita is disoriented and falls to the bottom of sea. “ya no puedo… I can’t…. a person isn’t a machine…. Es mi culpa…. Father forgive me…. Papi! Papi! One, two, one, two. Papi! Ay Papi! Where are you…? Don’t leave me… why don’t you answer me?”(5.45)
At the end of the story, where the family feel very sorry and the father blames himself of losing his daughter, “Eduardo : forgive me, forgive me. I’ve lost our daughter, our sister, our granddaughter, mi carne, mi sangre, mi ilusiones. Dios mio take me… take me, I say…. Goddammit, take me!”(7.3) and so the previous reporters come and reporting the accident, but suddenly and magically, they received word from Catalina that Margarita is the winner of the Wrigley Invitational Woman’s race. “Mary beth’s voice : Ah… excuse me, Mel… we have a winner. We’ve just received word from Catalina that one of the swimmers is just fifty yards from the breakers… it’s oh, it’s Margarita Suarez!”(7.10)

"THE MEANING OF IDIOMS"

The real meaning of the words in a sentence is called the literal meaning. An idiom is an expression with a meaning very different from the literal definitions of the words in them.

In an idiom, the words' definitions act as symbols and so they give the sentence an idiomatic meaning, which is most often used rather than the idiom's literal meaning.

Native English-speakers use idioms a lot, however, they can go "out of style" (become less popular) quite often, and new idioms are always being created. If an idiom is overused (used too much) then it becomes a cliché, most people dislike clichés. cliché is an expression that usually tries to teach people a life-lesson.

Try not to use idioms too deliberately (this means try not to plan to use them), because this sounds mechanical (like a machine). It is important that you use them naturally and confidently. One good way to start studying them is to first try to discover them when you hear native English-speakers talk (in a movie, for example). Remember that not all idioms are appropriate in every social situation, so pay close attention to the context of each example.

IDIOMS is also combination of words which have a specific meaning which is different, from when those word used in the visually. Here some examples of idiom in sentences :
  1. To CHIP IN -everyone adds money to pay for one thing "We all chipped in $10 to buy mom a birthday gift."
  2. To CHIP AWAY at -to slowly finish something "Are you finished your homework?" "No, but I'm chipping away at it."
  3. To CHILL -to make cold "I'm gonna chill the wine in the fridge." -relax (at home) "Let's chill & watch a movie."
  4. To CHEW OVER" -to think about making a decision "I'm chewing over your business suggestion."
  5. To CARRY ON -to continue "I will carry on studying biology in September."
  6. To CALL OFF" - to cancel "We called off the picnic because of rain."
  7. To GET THROUGH to someone -to try to communicate with someone “He's too angry for me to get through to him.”
  8. BY NO MEANS -'not at all' "I'm by no means a good cook!" "I can by no means finish tonight. I need more time."
  9. BY ANY MEANS -no matter what is done "I will become successful by any means."
  10. BY ALL MEANS -YES...no matter what! "Please, by all means, visit us!" "By all means, have some food."
  11. To BUY OFF -to bribe someone with money! VERY BAD! "The criminals bought off the corrupt politician."
  12. To BOSS someone AROUND -to tell someone what to do! You be Nice, not BOSSY! Please :)

“LULO AS A TRADITIONAL DANCE IN SOUTH EAST SULAWESI”

The first, South East Sulawesi is one of the provinces in Sulawesi, or often known as Celebes. South East Sulawesi then became a part of Indonesia in 1950, and became a separated province in 1964. Sea food is the specialty here, especially “ikan bakar” or roasted fish. Cuisine here generally tastes rather spicy. You should try “sinonggi”, a sagu porridge served with clam and fish soup. “Pokea or Pokea Satay” with peanut sauce is also tasty, served with baked sticky rice and some kind of lontong, steamed rice in banana leaves. These cuisine shows that South East Sulawesi is famous for its delicious seafood.

In addition to delicious seafood, the dances here also show the identity of south East Sulawesi. There are two kinds of dances here as I know, Lulo and Mondotambe dances. Tolakenese as one of tribe in this area, has some of the traditional dances, one of the traditional dances still frequently performed today is friendship dance, often called Lulo dance. Lulo dance is a culture of Tolakenese which become treasures that enrich the culture of Southeast Sulawesi. As a local art, Lulo has also become one of the cultural attributes that differentiate with other area of South East Sulawesi.

Actually, this dance was held in order of a wedding party, thanksgiving harvest, and other special occasions. The purpose is as a means to strengthen the brotherhood and often used to find a mate. But in its progress, this dance is also held when there are official or important guests come to visit our country. This dance is presented by beautiful dancers. At the same time, they also guide the officials or important guests to participate dancing. After this dance become treasures of Tolakenese, Lulo also become culture of tribes in this area, such as: Munanese, Buton, Moronene, etc.

Lulo was developed with the concept of adaptation and variation of movement. Five basic movements of Lulo such as: common Lulo, Lulo pata-pata, Moleba (jumping), Pinetabe (respect), and Lulo Hada (monkey). Participant of the dance are not limited by age or class, but anyone can participate in this Lulo dance. Rich, poor, old, young and even if you are not Tolakenese or from other countries can join this dance, the important thing is you can follow the dance movement. Nowadays, Lulo is adjusted and be varied of its movement to stay more “up to date” according to the progress of time.

Finally, Lulo dance has a simple and regular movement. Dancing Lulo is easy when you follow these steps. This dance performed by holding hands, stepping foot to the left two times, to the right two times, forward and back ward while stomping by following to music. Lulo gives the value of art itself for those who do it. Besides, there is a necessary thing to be considered in Lulo dance like hand position when holding hands, men’s palms is under women’s to support it. The purpose is that the dance movement can work in harmony, and the upper part of a woman's body is not touched by her partner while dancing. In addition, it is a form of symbol of the status, role, ethical men and women in daily life. Usually, this is done by regular movements and rotating in a loop.

“Our Student Our Future”

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations better known  as ASEAN is a geo-political and economic organization of ten countries located in Southeast Asia, which was formed on eighth of August 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Brunei Darussalam, Myanmar and Cambodia. The ASEAN COMMUNITY is a place where all ten countries come together to build a better life for everyone together as ten, we are stronger and can do more than one country alone, but to get there, we have to know, the programme is also aimed at three fundamental principles, which take us to the ASEAN COMMUNITY :

Firstly is PEACE; we need all ten countries to work together to keep the region safe. We won’t let terrorists, pirates and drugs come to ruin our countries. ASEAN countries don’t fight one another and we all live in peace.

Secondly is PROSPERITY; we can enjoy the good things that come with stronger economic development. As we attract more investors, business will grow and there will be more jobs and opportunities. And one day, we may be able to work in any ASEAN country of our choice, whether we are an engineer, a business woman or a nurse. Outside the cities, agriculture will also become more advanced. Our farmer will get benefit and so will we. Our quality of life will improve, we will have better road and transport systems, access to high tech innovation and be connected to the world, and as good neighbours, we will also help one another prosperity.

But peace and prosperity are not the only part of the ASEAN COMMUNITY, do you know what is the most important part?

PEOPLE!! Absolutely, ASEAN government work hard to ensure the people can enjoy a better life. And can you guess how ASEAN countries do that? By keeping environment clean and green, helping one another when disasters strike, working together to fight nasty disease, finding ways for our people to learn about one another, and to learn from each other and finding ways to keep our families strong.

Then, Students have an important role to play in the establishment of the ASEAN Community 2015.
In the current era of globalization, a superior generation is not longer an option but it has become a necessity for the nation.

Youth have a major contribution to the establishment of the ASEAN Community 2015. Begin to create a good image of Indonesia to them. Begin working with them to make friends for the sake of ASEAN and the global community.

Related to the conditions in Indonesia, there are some main challenges that must be faced by Indonesia to realize the community. The challenge is preparation is not structured properly, the lack of socialization of the ASEAN community and the necessity of ASEAN community in the curriculum ranging from elementary schools to build awareness of ASEAN.

So, the youth have to change the mindset of the consumer to be productive, as well as preparing for college graduates who are ready to compete at least at the level of ASEAN. It deals with the internationalization of study programs, curriculum, faculty and student exchange programs.

"Our Students, Our Future", aims to enhance student awareness of the necessity to live as good neighbours and foster worth cooperation among countries that are bound by linkages of history and culture.

Well-guided education can also shape an individual's character and identity, something that is essential for both economic growth and a healthy society.

The programme is also an opportunity for ASEAN schools to network, thereby enhancing togetherness, while fostering a spirit of equality and mutual understanding, and building a common identity among the bloc's youth.

This should be realized by the younger generation who actually has a chance of very large compared with the previous generation.

Don’t talk, just act. Don’t say, just show. And don’t promise just prove, because no one is too young to be part of ASEAN COMMUNITY, because we can start with simple things, such as : make friends with young people from other ASEAN countries and learn another ASEAN languages if we can, find out more about the region’s history, most of all be proud of our identity as an ASEAN citizen and look forward to what the future holds.

Think positive and positive things will happen. So nothing is impossible, because we can if we think we can.
I think enough, more or less apologize me from all mistakes. Thank you

Wassalam ‘alaikum warohmatullahi wabarokatuh
