“LULO AS A TRADITIONAL DANCE IN SOUTH EAST SULAWESI”

The first, South East Sulawesi is one of the provinces in Sulawesi, or often known as Celebes. South East Sulawesi then became a part of Indonesia in 1950, and became a separated province in 1964. Sea food is the specialty here, especially “ikan bakar” or roasted fish. Cuisine here generally tastes rather spicy. You should try “sinonggi”, a sagu porridge served with clam and fish soup. “Pokea or Pokea Satay” with peanut sauce is also tasty, served with baked sticky rice and some kind of lontong, steamed rice in banana leaves. These cuisine shows that South East Sulawesi is famous for its delicious seafood.

In addition to delicious seafood, the dances here also show the identity of south East Sulawesi. There are two kinds of dances here as I know, Lulo and Mondotambe dances. Tolakenese as one of tribe in this area, has some of the traditional dances, one of the traditional dances still frequently performed today is friendship dance, often called Lulo dance. Lulo dance is a culture of Tolakenese which become treasures that enrich the culture of Southeast Sulawesi. As a local art, Lulo has also become one of the cultural attributes that differentiate with other area of South East Sulawesi.

Actually, this dance was held in order of a wedding party, thanksgiving harvest, and other special occasions. The purpose is as a means to strengthen the brotherhood and often used to find a mate. But in its progress, this dance is also held when there are official or important guests come to visit our country. This dance is presented by beautiful dancers. At the same time, they also guide the officials or important guests to participate dancing. After this dance become treasures of Tolakenese, Lulo also become culture of tribes in this area, such as: Munanese, Buton, Moronene, etc.

Lulo was developed with the concept of adaptation and variation of movement. Five basic movements of Lulo such as: common Lulo, Lulo pata-pata, Moleba (jumping), Pinetabe (respect), and Lulo Hada (monkey). Participant of the dance are not limited by age or class, but anyone can participate in this Lulo dance. Rich, poor, old, young and even if you are not Tolakenese or from other countries can join this dance, the important thing is you can follow the dance movement. Nowadays, Lulo is adjusted and be varied of its movement to stay more “up to date” according to the progress of time.

Finally, Lulo dance has a simple and regular movement. Dancing Lulo is easy when you follow these steps. This dance performed by holding hands, stepping foot to the left two times, to the right two times, forward and back ward while stomping by following to music. Lulo gives the value of art itself for those who do it. Besides, there is a necessary thing to be considered in Lulo dance like hand position when holding hands, men’s palms is under women’s to support it. The purpose is that the dance movement can work in harmony, and the upper part of a woman's body is not touched by her partner while dancing. In addition, it is a form of symbol of the status, role, ethical men and women in daily life. Usually, this is done by regular movements and rotating in a loop.
